3 March
Plantable Seed Paper. An extremely messy workshop but (hopefully) worth it in the end. We will make two recipes, one from white shredded junk mail and another from newspaper. I will soak the paper over night and during the session we will stir it and break it down further with a food processor. We will mix in the seeds then spread the pulp on pieces of gauze on two separate boards. We’ll then drain and squeeze as much water out as possible. It will be dry by the following week and ready to cut into gift tags and note cards.
10 March
Popcorn Lovers Day. Did you know that in Mexico, remnants of popcorn have been found that date back to circa 3600 BC, and fossil evidence from Peru suggests that corn may have been popped as early as 4700 BC.
To celebrate the historic importance of this popular culinary marvel, we’ll make a couple of popcorn recipes: Bombay popcorn mix using chickpeas, peanuts, sultanas and spices; Maple Crunch Popcorn using lots of butter, maple syrup and pecans.
If you have a nut allergy, please let me know and we can substitute one of the recipes.
In addition to popping corn, we’ll cut and decorate our seed paper from last week.
17 March
Trip to the Postal Museum. We’ll take a tour of the museum as well as a short ride on the postal train. We’ll meet at the Museum at 13:00, 15-20 Phoenix Place, WC1X 0DA. Or meet at The Phoenix Garden at 12:30 and we’ll catch the 19 or 28 bus to Rosebery Avenue.
Please note there is a flight of stairs leading to and from the mail train, there is no lift. The train is small so if you suffer from claustrophobia, you might want to skip this part of the trip. You can still visit the museum and there is a café and gift shop. There are lockers to put bags and bulky items as it’s best to travel light on the train. The trip takes about 15/20 minutes.
The museum is on two sides of the road. The train ride is first then we will visit the main museum which is completely flat so you won’t have to worry about steps. There is plenty of seating.
24 March
Plant a mini succulent garden. Bring your own ornamental pot or dish to plant you own succulent garden. We have plastic pots if you don’t have any at home. Choose up to 3 succulents. Ideal for an indoor, light space or leave it with us and we can sell it at our Spring Family Fun Day to raise funds for further sessions.
31 March
Seedballs for bumblebees and other pollinators. Ideal for a plant pot, flowerbed, road side or an entire meadow, sowing wildflowers provides vital resources to support a wide range of insects that couldn’t otherwise survive in urban or built-up areas.
We will use a clay and compost mix along with a selection of organic flower seeds.
